If you're looking for local restaurants that offer great food, great service, and history lessons, dine at the oldest eateries in Savannah. They provide a fun journey back in time, and welcome visitors from around the world. Some of the oldest dining destinations near our Savannah apartments include:
Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room
While the house was constructed in the late 1800s, it didn't become home to Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room until 1943. Sema Wilke took over the boardinghouse from the previous owner. She set herself apart by offering her tenants home-cooked Southern meals and served the dishes family-style. Sema later stopped taking boarders but kept the doors open to provide lunch to anyone who wanted a hot meal. Today, her family carries on her tradition. The restaurant is open for lunch Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Menu offerings change daily, and the large tables of ten are often shared by strangers.
The Pirates' House
Founded in 1753, The Pirates' House was originally an inn for seafarers. It quickly became a meeting place for sailors and pirates of the Seven Seas. Today, it's said that if the walls could talk, they'd have plenty of stories to tell. In the kitchen, the chefs prepare a varied menu. The dishes feature the finest ingredients and are best enjoyed with a refreshing cocktail. Dinner offerings include Cheshire prime pork tenderloin, slow-cooked baby back ribs, and the restaurant's award-winning honey pecan fried chicken.
Crystal Beer Parlor
Founded in 1933, the Crystal Beer Parlor is located inside what was once the Gerken Family Grocery Store. It was one of the country's first restaurants to serve alcohol after the repeal of Prohibition. Now the eatery is the site of many first dates and engagements, and its walls are spotted with pictures of Savannah's most famous and infamous residents. Menu offerings include veggie burgers, traditional gyros, and shrimp and grits.
