For a fun-filled afternoon, head to the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. It offers a fun journey back in time with paintings, antiques, and ship models dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Here is some of what you can discover near our Savannah apartments:
Scarbrough House
Now home to the museum, the Scarbrough House has stood since 1819. In fact, it was originally built as the residence of William Scarbrough. He came to town in 1802 and was a principal owner of the Savannah (the first steamship to cross the Atlantic). Today, the home is one of the South's earliest examples of domestic Greek Revival architecture. It was used as a school from the 1870s through the 1960s, and later sat abandoned until the museum restored the house between 1996 and 1997.
The Gardens
Step outside and explore the gardens. Full of color, they offer something to see throughout the year. Broad-leaf evergreens greet visitors at the entrance, and as you explore, you'll see old varieties of azaleas, camellias, Indian hawthorn magnolias, and many more. Additionally, you will also see a cast-iron temple that was the official U.S. government weather station in Savannah. It featured instruments that recorded things like velocity, record wind speed, and temperature.
Collection
The museum also boasts nine galleries filled with unique pieces highlighting maritime history. One of the items includes a model of the Anne. In 1832, she set sail to America with 114 colonists headed to the new colony of Georgia. The ship departed from the mouth of the Thames, and the entire journey took about two months.
