Check Out The Oatland Island Wildlife Center in Savannah

Spend a Fun-filled Day at the Oatland Island Wildlife Center

Lace up your hiking boots at the Oatland Island Wildlife Center. As you explore the rustic trail, you will discover over 95 animals exhibited in natural habitats. The following is some of what the center has to offer near The Slate’s Savannah apartments:

Nine-banded Armadillo

Found in the southeastern United States, nine-banded armadillos live in forested and grassland habitats. These animals swim or walk along river bottoms and can hold their breath for up to six minutes underwater. Nine-banded armadillos also have a keen sense of smell. They can track nearly 500 different foods and feast on everything from fruit to beetles. Make sure you see the Armadillo when you visit the Wildlife center.

Gray Wolf

Gray wolves that live in the North are generally larger than those that live in the South. Their fur is a blend of gray and brown, and they often have black-tipped long, bushy tails. Gray wolves bark in warning, while howling is used for long-distance communication. In the wild, these wolves also live in packs. Most have four to nine members, and the alpha male is dominant over the entire pack. The gray wolf is a must see when you are at the center.

Great Horned Owl

Also called tiger owls, great horned owls have habitats in nearly all North America. They can be identified by their deep hoots and intimidating yellow-eyed stares. Birdwatchers also identify them by their mottled gray-brown feathers and reddish-brown faces with a white patch on their throats. Great horned owls mainly hunt at night. They also eat mammals and birds, and their prey includes mice, rabbits, and geese.

The Oatland Island Wildlife Center is open daily between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. After visiting the center, enjoy a tasty chicken sandwich at a nearby restaurant. Finally, to call The Slate home, please contact our leasing team. They will schedule a guided tour where you can see everything you can enjoy as a resident of our Savannah apartments.
