As we head into the winter months, there’s decreased daylight, drearier days, and less time to spend out in the sunshine. Combat the winter blues (also known as seasonal affective disorder) with these mood-boosting foods you can pick up at your local farmers market. Plus, you’ll be supporting small businesses!
1. Eggs
Loaded with vitamins and macronutrients, eggs are a great food to incorporate into your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, all sorts of B vitamins, and even zinc help to boost your mood and also aid in reducing inflammation!
2. Fish
Salmon and halibut are a delicious and nutrient-dense food loaded with – you guessed it – omega-3 fatty acids.
3. Dark Chocolate
Treat your brain cells and your taste buds to a little dark chocolate – it’s full of cocoa flavonols that help boost your cognitive function!
4. Seeds
Not a fan of fish? No problem! Seeds are another great option to get those omega-3 fatty acids, sans the scales. Steer toward pumpkin, flax, and chia seeds – those are the most nutrient-dense.
5. Natural Oils
Swap out those unhealthy oils like canola (vegetable) and replace it with olive oil, avocado oil, or even ghee for a healthy dose of mood-boosting fat.
6. Greens
Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are on practically every healthy eating list, and for good reason! Their micro and macronutrients do your brain and body good with the essential phytochemicals your nervous system needs to function properly.
