5 TIPS TO CLEAR OUT YOUR CLOSET THIS SPRING CLEANING SEASON

|

Is your closet overflowing with items you no longer use or need? Although it’s difficult to part with that pair of jeans that you once loved or that dress that you might wear again some day, those things are wasting your space, time, and energy. Use these five tried-and-true tips to tackle your closet clutter once and for all.

Start With A Clean Slate

When it comes to organizing your closet, it’s best to start fresh. So pull everything – yes, we mean everything! – out of your closet and pile it on the bed. We are going to winnow your wardrobe down to contain only those items you use and love. Or, as Marie Kondo would say, those items that “spark joy.”

Edit & Sort

Next, grab a box for donations and/or items to sell. Now begin sorting. In order to truly keep only the pieces that you need and love, every item must be approached with a critical eye. This might be easy for some of you, but we find that a few questions will help the process go more smoothly: Does it fit? Have I worn it in the last year? If I saw this item in a store today, would I buy it? If the answer to any of these questions is no, it’s time to pass it along.

Get Organized

One of the keys to having a closet that works for you is placing the clothing that you use most front and center. Organize by style, season, and occasion, keeping items that are current favorites within easy reach. Clothing that is out of season or used only for special occasions can be placed on the top shelves or hung toward the outer edges of your closet.

Out With the Old

Now that your closet is organized, your job is not done. Immediately donate your discarded items before they make their way back into the mix. If you have on-trend pieces that are gently used, you could try listing them on Poshmark, Mercari, or eBay to generate a little extra cash.

Maintain Order

The key to maintaining your closet is to edit, edit, and then edit again! As you add new pieces to your collection, consider purging an item for each new piece that you add.
