Meet Exotic Animals at Sarasota’s Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary

Learn About Exotic Animals at Sarasota's Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary

Not far from our Sarasota apartments is a unique animal rescue that's home to dozens of exotic animals. This fun attraction is known as the Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary. Its mission is to foster an appreciation of wildlife while highlighting the importance of habitat preservation. Here are some of the animals you'll discover during your visit:

Ring-tailed Lemur

Known for their raccoon-like markings, ring-tailed lemurs feature black-rimmed eyes and tails with alternating black-and-white bands. Their fur ranges from tawny to gray, and they're about the size of a house cat. In the wild, ring-tailed lemurs call southern and southwestern Madagascar home. They spend much of their time on the ground and enjoy eating the fruit and leaves of the tamarind tree.

Liger

Ligers have lions for fathers and tigers for mothers. These animals are the world's largest cats. They look like both parents, but bigger. Ligers date back to early 19th-century India, and only exist in captivity.

Sun Conure

Native to northeastern South America, sun conures are brightly colored parrots that are currently endangered. They're facing a loss of habitat and trapping for the pet trade. Sun Conures enjoy human interaction, and when these birds get the attention they need, they show off their playful and affectionate sides.

Big Cat Bistro

After learning about the fascinating animals, enjoy lunch at the Big Cat Bistro. Out of a mobile catering kitchen, Chef Sam Smith creates some of the tastiest burgers in town. Other offerings include Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, chicken fingers, and fries.
