How much light do you get in the room where your plant will live? Which direction is your window facing? How close to the window will your plant be placed? To choose the right plant, you’ll need to consider not only how many hours of light it will get, but the type of light, too – direct or indirect, the direction it’s coming from, and how close to the window the plant will be. Snake plants, aloe vera, and geraniums will need long periods of direct sunlight, dieffenbachia, ferns, and begonias prefer medium light, and ivy, philodendrons, and spider plants do well in rooms with indirect or low light.
Size
How much space do you have for your plant? Keep in mind that you don’t want to shove your new houseplant into an overstuffed bookshelf or on a crowded windowsill.
