BRING THE OUTSIDE IN - HOW TO SELECT THE PERFECT PLANT(S) FOR YOUR SPACE

|

There are countless reasons for keeping houseplants. Just to name two, they bring a sense of beauty and coziness into a space and most of them filter the air, which is a huge health benefit.

Getting houseplants is typically an easy task, except that you need to keep a few details in mind to pick those that will thrive in your home. If you’ve wanted to bring a plant into your home, here are some tips to help you choose the right ones.

Light

How much light do you get in the room where your plant will live? Which direction is your window facing? How close to the window will your plant be placed? To choose the right plant, you’ll need to consider not only how many hours of light it will get, but the type of light, too – direct or indirect, the direction it’s coming from, and how close to the window the plant will be. Snake plants, aloe vera, and geraniums will need long periods of direct sunlight, dieffenbachia, ferns, and begonias prefer medium light, and ivy, philodendrons, and spider plants do well in rooms with indirect or low light.

Size

How much space do you have for your plant? Keep in mind that you don’t want to shove your new houseplant into an overstuffed bookshelf or on a crowded windowsill. Plants need plenty of room to capture as much light as possible to stay healthy. Choose a size that will easily fit – with room to spare – in the space you have.

Care

It is important to choose a houseplant that works with your needs in terms of the time you have to give it. While plants aren’t as demanding of our time as pets are, they still need regular attention. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time watering and tending, go for low-maintenance varieties like Cuban Oregano or philodendrons.

Pets

Remember that some plants can be deadly to your pets. If you have furry friends, it’s essential you check to make sure the plants you want won’t harm them. Go with money trees, bromeliads, and peperomia.
