Hike around the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
For a fun-filled afternoon outdoors, lace up your hiking boots and head to the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. It offers a picturesque "place where you can find peace and connect with nature." Here are a few of the arboretum trails you can explore near our Jacksonville apartments.
Upper Ravine Trail
Stroll along the short 0.3-mile Upper Ravine Trail to see longleaf pines. Believe it or not, these majestic trees once dotted more than 90 million acres in the southeastern coastal plains. They can reach 125 feet in height, and full maturity takes between 100 and 125 years.
Lake Loop Trail
Also offering a short, scenic adventure, the Lake Loop Trail offers stunning views of Lake Ray. You may spot ducks, turtles, and reptiles basking in the sun. Plant and tree collections are also found along the path. Expect a 25-foot elevation drop between the start of the trail and Lake Loop's eastern side.
Live Oak Trail
Home to the National Champion Loblolly Bay, the Live Oak Trail leads hikers across picturesque rolling terrain. Several of the oaks are 100 years old or more. You may also see native azaleas and blueberries growing along the path during the spring months. Live Oak stretches 0.5 miles and also connects to the Lake Loop and Rosemary Ridge trails for a longer journey.
Sand Ridge Trail
For a more challenging adventure, explore the winding Sand Ridge Trail. It crosses multiple habitats, including a mixed hardwood forest. Found in low elevations, this forest covers about 40 percent of the arboretum. You'll see bald cypress trees, wax myrtles, and more.
