Learn Something New at Durango Museums

Learning something new is always exciting, and our Durango apartments are never far from an opportunity to expand your knowledge. Check out these Durango museums to explore science, wildlife, trains, and more!

The Powerhouse Science Center

The Powerhouse Science Center stands directly on the banks of the Animas River. The museum is in a historical coal-fired steam power AC generating plant and offers diverse programs, exhibits, and activities. The Powerhouse Science Center, per its name, creates exciting spaces to explore science with interactive activities for all ages.

Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum

Located at the oldest state-owned fish hatchery in Colorado, the Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum houses and raises diverse types of fish. The museum building stands alongside the Animas River and is open year-round, regardless of the season. Although admission is free, bring quarters so you can feed the fish!

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Museum was built in the Durango railway roundhouse on the D&RGW line. In addition to providing insight into Durango's local railroad history, it also exhibits the history of railroads, transportation, and mining. They add and update exhibits frequently. Since admission is free, you can check in often to see what new learning experiences they have available.

The Animas Museum

Travel back in time to a real 1905 classroom. The La Plata County Historical Society owns and operates the Animas Museum. The building is a refurbished 1904 city school building. Although they offer exhibits and programs online, their on-site exhibits shouldn't be missed. As of 2019, the museum's building is on the National Register of Historic Places, so this is a great opportunity to experience a real piece of history.

After an exciting day of learning new things, make sure to stop by Durango's bakeries for a sweet treat! When you are looking for more information on our Durango apartments, contact our team. We can help you make Rocket Pointe your next home.
