Move over, Padres, Legion, Seals, and Aviators. You have some company in the San Diego professional sports scene. In June, the National Women’s Soccer League team announced Wave FC would be joining its ranks starting in 2022. Here’s the full scoop on San Diego’s newest squad.
What Is the NWSL?
The NWSL is the United States’ highest-level women’s soccer league. Founded in 2012, the league began play in 2013 and has grown in popularity ever since. With Wave FC and Los Angeles-based Angel City FC joining the circuit in 2022, the NWSL is up to 12 teams.
When Will They Play?
The 2022 season begins in the spring, though the schedule has yet to be released. Stay tuned to the Wave FC and NWSL sites for updates.
Where Will They Play?
That would be Torero Stadium, the University of San Diego’s picturesque football and soccer venue.
Meet the Head Coach
Casey Stoney, a standout defender for England’s national team back in her playing days, is Wave FC’s first head coach. She brings more than a decade of managerial experience in England to the table.
Do They Have Any Players Yet?
They do! Wave FC has begun wheeling, dealing, and building its roster for 2022. Between the transfer window, which in soccer talk means trading, and the NWSL’s expansion and regular drafts earlier this month, Wave FC’s inaugural roster is quickly taking shape. The hands-down highlight for the Wave so far is landing Team USA legend Alex Morgan via a trade with the Orlando Pride. Talk about starpower right off the bat. Keep tabs on the team’s roster and moves on the team’s website.
