THE SAN DIEGO THEATRE SCENE

|

Many people know that San Diego has great bars and restaurants, but what many do not know is that San Diego is a highly regarded theatre town.

Old Globe Theater

San Diego's world famous Old Globe Theatre, located in the heart of Balboa Park, is the perfect place for an evening of culture and fun. The original San Diego Globe Theatre was built in 1935 in order to recreate a Shakespearian venue during the California Pacific International Exposition. Through the decades that followed, the Globe weathered many changes, including a devastating fire in 1978. It was rebuilt and expanded and now includes three beautiful venues for enjoying gorgeously staged plays from well-known classics to contemporary hits. In fact, twenty original Globe productions have gone on to huge Broadway success. San Diegans have the enviable opportunity to see these plays first. While the Old Globe does fifteen main stage shows annually, it's beloved for its outdoor summer festival of Shakespeare and other classics.

San Diego Civic Theatre

If you're in the mood for a big, well-known musical, one where you know all the words to all the songs, Broadway San Diego brings touring shows to the San Diego Civic Theatre. You can't go wrong with the most tried and true musical extravaganzas, like Wicked and Dirty Dancing. The runs of these shows are typically short, often just a week long, and the musicals tend to be the most popular ones out there, so book early if you don't want to miss out.

La Jolla Playhouse

Another local theatre that has become a testing ground for innovative new plays and musicals, with a whopping thirty productions that have gone on to Broadway, is the Tony award winning La Jolla Playhouse. Actor Gregory Peck, originally from San Diego, founded the Playhouse with Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer in 1947. Today, the modern complex is nestled into beautiful grounds in the heart of La Jolla, with three stunning venues for experiencing the most compelling productions and professional performances you'll find anywhere in the country.

At Olympus Corsair, you have access to the best of San Diego stages and performance venues. Whether it's an evening in La Jolla that includes dinner overlooking the ocean followed by a magical theatre experience, a romantic stroll through Balboa Park to the Old Globe, or a Broadway musical downtown, you can experience world class entertainment close to home.
