Attend the 50th Anniversary of the Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest
Every year for the last 50, a single family in Big Bear Lake has held one of the largest Oktoberfest parties in the U.S. This year’s event is scheduled to run from September 12 through November 7 and offers authentic German entertainment, friendly competitions like stein carrying and log sawing, the same beers poured at Munich’s Oktoberfest, and lots and lots of dancing.
Hike Mount San Gorgonio
Southern California’s mighty Mount San Gorgonio stands at 11,499 feet and is the southernmost glaciated landscape in California. The area is so stunning that Walt Disney once considered developing it into a world-class ski resort. Lucky for us, he didn’t – it’s now a pristine and protected wilderness with terrific hiking trails and wildlife viewing. For an epic day, hike to the summit and you might just catch a glimpse of Catalina Island in the distance.
Explore the Fall Colors
Stands of aspen and oak trees make for a colorful fall display in the Big Bear Valley. From crimson and gold, to ambers and yellows, the landscape lights up before winter settles into the California mountains. Consider viewing the valley’s show from the lake by renting a pontoon boat from Big Bear Marina, or hike Cougar Crest trail to the ridgeline for a high-alpine view.
Have an Epic Mountain Bike Ride
Skyline Trail, Big Bear’s newest trail in their extensive system, traces the southern ridgeline for an epic 11-mile (one way) cross-country adventure. Start at Bear Mountain parking lot for a stout single-track and fire road climb up before a rolling, and sometimes technical, trail across the top before descending to Aspen Glen picnic area. Set up a car shuttle or explore other trails – like Pine Knot to Knickerbocker and Upper and Lower Fall Line – to get back to your wheels.
Get a Birds Eye View with a Helicopter Tour
Take flight over the Big Bear Valley with Helicopter Big Bear and experience a scenic aerial adventure like no other. Gain an amazing perspective of the sheer beauty of the San Bernardino mountains as well as an appreciation for all the natural landmarks like the Santa Ana River Canyon, the Mojave Desert, and the San Gorgonio mountain range offer.
