Just because Valentine’s Day is over doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep up the celebration with a little extra indulgence. Lucky for you, San Diego offers countless opportunities for you to treat yourself. Here are some local favorites.
Sweet Shoppe
Head over to Belmont Park for an oceanside treat. This eatery offers a full spectrum of sweet indulgences: banana splits, cotton candy, frozen bananas, homemade fudge, and caramel apples. However, their claim to fame is their epic ice cream cone – “monster” waffle cones filled with scoop after scoop after scoop of ice cream in flavors ranging from butter pecan to chocolate chip cookie dough. Just try to finish the whole thing before it starts melting down your hand – that’s half the fun of it!
Cousin’s Candy Shop
In Old Town, this shop will take you back in time to the candy stores of the 19th Century. You’ll find bulk items like jelly beans, licorice pastels and wheels, and Necco wafers. They also carry a wide variety of chocolate confections like fudge, chocolate peanut butter, and maple nut. However, they’re most famous for their old-fashioned saltwater taffy, made fresh every day and individually wrapped by employees who are dedicated to giving customers a nostalgic experience and high-quality treats.
See’s Candies
Remember these delicious treats that were all the rage in the 80s? They’re still around because no one does chocolate quite like See’s. Try a box of Nuts and Chews or get a custom blend. (Their Scotchmallow, Dark Marzipan, and Rum Nougat are incredibly delicious.) They also carry their classic line of old-fashioned candies like dark chocolate balls, molasses chips, and butterscotch lollipops.
Sugar Factory
Fourteen thousand square feet worth of treats with more than 500 varieties – does it get better than this? This place is pure indulgence, as you can see from their menu, which features items like bacon cheeseburger milkshakes, red velvet sundaes for two, and a super stack of sugar-dusted pancakes. You can even get drinks (alcoholic or non) in candy goblets. And don’t forget their Couture Pops, sported by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna.
And if all these sweet treats make you want to experiment in the kitchen with your own candies, try this simple recipe for Chocolate Candy Clusters.
