APRIL 12 IS NATIONAL GRILLED CHEESE DAY - HERE ARE 4 TIPS FOR A BETTER SANDWICH

|

When it comes to grilled cheese, there is such a thing as a properly made sandwich. Say goodbye to the basic white bread and American cheese sandwich and hello to a world of artisan grilled-cheesy goodness with these four tips for a better sandwich. (You’ll want to try these in advance of our upcoming “Grilled Cheese Masterpiece” contest on National Grilled Cheese Day, April 12!)

Dough Matters

Don’t get pressured into the basic white bread mentality when it comes to making your grilled cheese. Think outside of the (bread) box and consider these tasty alternatives that can take your sandwich to next-level status: sourdough, brioche, rye, potato, multi-grain pumpernickel are all excellent choices.

Make It a Cheese Party

Sticking to just one cheese in your sandwich is just wrong. Branch out and add a few different kinds of cheese and combinations to get the taste buds loving life. Provolone, Monterey Jack, Swiss, American, smoky cheddar, brie, mozzarella, and Havarti are solid choices. Mix and match flavors that go well together.

Add The Toppings

What’s a grilled cheese sandwich without a few delicious toppings to add some pizazz? Spruce up your ordinary sandwich with some fresh produce like avocado slices, arugula, sliced tomato, and some caramelized onion for a garden grilled cheese. Make it a meat lover’s sando with some pieces of crispy bacon, seared pepperoni, ham, turkey, or any protein you love. Add an unexpected ingredient like sliced apples and honey with some baked brie for a nice crunch and sweet taste. And if you’re looking for more of a crunch and good for your gut food, add some pickled goods like relish, pickled onions, sauerkraut, or pickles to your cheese-oozing sando.

Grill To Perfection

When it’s time to grill, don’t skimp on the fat needed to give your sandwich that nice golden-brown glaze and crunch on the outside. Smear your fat of choice — butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, or coconut oil — onto the outer bread slices. Next, decide your cooking style. Grab your panini press for that perfectly-grilled sando. Or place your assembled sandwich in the oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, flipping once. The never-fail skillet method always works, grilling your sando on medium heat skillet for 6-8 minutes.

How will you make the most of your grilled cheese? Try out these four tips for a better sandwich, then show us your grilled cheese masterpiece on April 12 by sending us a picture on Instagram or emailing the team at Fusion Apartments.
