The nights are slowly getting longer, and it's the ideal time to indulge in some stargazing near our apartments in Gilbert. Check out these groups and locations that will help you see to "infinity and beyond:"
East Valley Astronomy Club
This friendly group welcomes anyone with an interest in astronomy, from beginners to more advanced hobbyists. You'll find a treasure trove of wisdom in this group. EVAC members are open to sharing their knowledge about viewing equipment, projects, and more. The group has access to some excellent local observation sites, which you can also gain entry to as a member. EVAC also hosts regular "star parties" to promote awareness of astronomy within the community.
Gilbert Rotary Centennial Observatory
This local dome provides the perfect vantage point for observing the cosmos. Every Friday and Saturday, starting at sunset and ending at 9:30 p.m., the public is invited to view the stars through the impressive mechanized telescope in the observatory. The staff chooses particular objects for viewing, so you won't need to enter the dome with a specific plan in mind. Don't plan on bringing your phone into the dome, though. Observatory etiquette calls for a dark space so as to allow for optimal viewing.
The Riparian Preserve
This natural open space is ideal for stargazing after sundown. The preserve is open until 10:00 p.m. each night, allowing you plenty of time to spot a comet (if the timing is right) or take in a view of a planet. A bonus of coming here after dark is that you'll be able to hear soothing nature sounds here on Earth while enjoying your peek into the wider universe. It's easy to let the busy fall routine take over your days and nights, but it's important to find time to relax.
