Spend the Day at the Phoenix Zoo Near Gilbert
Not far from our Gilbert apartments is a fun destination that inspires people to care for the natural world. It is called the Phoenix Zoo, and it's where you can stroll along trails to learn about animals from around the world. Here are some of the trails you'll discover:
The Tropics Trail features an array of animals, from those that roar to those that move at slow speeds. A highlight includes the charming Bornean orangutans. True to their name, they only call the island of Borneo home. They're the largest fruit-eating animals, and their meals also consist of bark, leaves, flowers, and nuts. In the wild, orangutans live up to 40 years. These animals are considered endangered.
Along the Africa Trail, you'll find some of the world's most popular animals. The giraffes stand out above the rest. Males reach heights of 18 feet tall, while females are shorter at 15 feet tall. They only compete with elephants for food and avoid drinking water for long periods.
The Arizona Trail showcases the flora and fauna of the Grand Canyon State. One of the animals you'll see includes the collared peccary. Better known as the javelina, they're found anywhere from the desert floor to up to 7,000 feet in elevation. They have a keen sense of smell and poor eyesight. Javelinas are social, and in the wild, they can live in herds featuring more than 20 individuals. On cold nights, they pile on top of each other to preserve heat as they have coarse, hollow hair with little insulation capabilities.
