For a fun journey back in time, head to the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park. It provides a glimpse into what life was like in a small, territorial logging town. Here is some of what the park offers near our Flagstaff apartments:
Riordan Mansion Tour
Constructed in 1904 for two Riordan families, the duplex-style Riordan Mansion is one of today's best examples of American Arts and Crafts-style architecture open to the public. Both homes were constructed with central heat, electric lights, indoor plumbing, and other modern advances. Today, they look much like they did in the early 1900s. To see inside the mansion, take a guided tour. Along the way, the friendly guide will share fascinating stories about the Riordan family and Flagstaff's history. The tour lasts about an hour and ends on the first floor of the West House, where you can learn about local interests and the Arts and Crafts movement. The staff highly recommends making reservations.
Wildlife Viewing
As you explore the grounds, you'll see an array of wildlife. Common sightings include ravens, finches, and house sparrows. Abert's squirrels also pay an occasional visit. These animals received their name from American naturalist and military officer Colonel John James Abert. He organized the effort to map the American West in the nineteenth century. The squirrels are easily identified by their dark gray backs with a reddish-brown patch and white undersides. They eat the cones of ponderosa pines and are often found high in the trees, searching for their next meal.
Riordan Lecture Series
Don't miss the Riordan Lecture Series. The museum holds these lectures on the second Monday of every month at 12:15 p.m. The topics vary, and you'll learn about everything from tea to the people who once called the Riordan Mansion home.
Before visiting the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park, enjoy your favorite cup of coffee at a nearby shop. Finally, to call Mountain Trail home, please contact us. We will show you everything our apartments in Flagstaff have to offer.
