Discover Nature's Beauty on Day Hikes in Flagstaff

Connecting with nature is a powerful stress reliever. It sharpens our minds and calms our nerves as we leave everyday life behind. Head out from our apartments in Flagstaff on these scenic day hikes and explore the great outdoors.

Old Caves Crater Trail

From the trailhead, Old Caves Crater Trail is a two-and-a-half mile round trip journey that leaves plenty of time for picnicking and exploration. The hike through volcanic cinder fields is challenging but rewarding. The trail leads to the base of an extinct cinder cone volcano, and a linking trail encircles the entire cone. Switchbacks climb the cone. At the top, follow the splitting trail in one direction to enjoy access to ancient, long uninhabited caves. The trail's other endpoint directs visitors to expansive summit views.

Kendrick Park Watchable Wildlife Trail

As the name suggests, Kendrick Park Watchable Wildlife Trail is a perfect place to get a glimpse of all the wild creatures around us. The mix of forest and grassland makes this an ideal location for wildlife. Spot a porcupine, a mule deer, or various local birds. Interpretive educational signs along the way help visitors identify animals and their habitats. This mile-and-a-half-long loop includes a quarter-mile section of paved trail, which is wheelchair accessible.

Veit Springs Trail

Historical Veit Springs Trail is a beautiful walk through woods and meadows filled with aspen. Along the way, hikers encounter the site of the former Veit family homestead from the 1800s, complete with the family's original cabin, storage shed, and well. This well-used site is rumored to have once been a hideout for stagecoach robbers. Searches for lost treasure are also part of the land's storied past. This easy mile-and-a-half loop trail has little elevation and is a perfect stroll any time of day. Be sure to stay hydrated and pack plenty of snacks to keep up your energy while exploring on day hikes in Flagstaff.
