Flagstaff is a great place to be in the winter. Those who aren’t familiar with the area are often surprised by how many opportunities there are to play in the snow.
Here are a few to check out yourself.
Arizona Nordic Village
Just 15 miles northwest of Flagstaff, nestled in the Coconino National Forest, is this winter wonderland. With their yurts, cabins, and campgrounds, it’s a favorite place for summer camping. And there’s plenty to do there in winter, too! They have two types of trails to accommodate all visitors: the Skate & Classic Ski Trails, and the Snowshoe & Multi-Use Trails. The former trails are 16-feet wide with a classic track set on one side and corduroy finish on the other. The latter trails are packed by snowmobiles for those who want to snow bike. And if you aren’t experienced with winter sports, you can take lessons on site!
Flagstaff Snow Park
Get ready for some serious fun at this winter hot spot. Let’s get to the most important thing to know about this snow park: they have an epic tubing run that will make you feel like a kid again. You can buy tickets for a morning, afternoon, or night session, or splurge and get a full day pass. There are also plenty of opportunities to play in the recreation area. And all guests enjoy the food and drink offerings as well as the outdoor fireplaces where you can roast marshmallows and enjoy a steaming cup of hot cocoa.
Oak Hill Snow Play Area
On a budget this winter? No problem. You can find plenty of snowy adventures at this location – and no tickets or passes are required! In the 1950s, this recreation site, 30 minutes from Flagstaff, was a ski area. Today, you’ll find two sledding runs – one short, gentle one, and one long, very steep one. Their only requirement is that you use tubes or sleds made of flexible materials in order to be as safe as possible. Bring a winter picnic, because believe us, you will work up an appetite climbing up to the top of the larger sledding run. You can use the fire pit for making s’mores, which will keep your hands toasty.
