This Halloween season, think outside of the pumpkin. While the carving of a traditional pumpkin never gets old, it's pretty fun to try your hand at creating a spooky masterpiece out of a different fruit or vegetable. So get creative and carve away with these four fruits and vegetables that are easy to carve and even better to eat.
Pineapple-Lantern
If you find yourself in a tropical locale this Halloween, why not try your hand at pineapple carving? Pineapple-lanterns have gained in popularity in recent years. The pineapple’s oblong shape can make for some truly unique pineapple-lanterns, but be sure to have an extremely sharp knife handy. Pineapples are definitely tougher to carve than pumpkins.
Potatoes
Potatoes are quite the versatile vegetable. You can mash them, bake them, cut them into French fries, and yes, even carve a spooky face onto them. They're fairly easy to carve and just big enough to insert a battery-operated tealight to complete the look.
Melons
Go big this Halloween with a watermelon-lantern. The green hues make it the perfect goblin-carving medium. Here's a tip: Instead of a traditional jack-o’-lantern template, create a face with a huge, open mouth, so you can see the red colors inside. At your Halloween party, you can serve the fruit you removed from its insides as tasty gore that’s spilling from its jaws. You'll win for creativity, all while providing a delicious snack.
Avocado
Just when you thought avocados couldn't be any cooler, someone goes and carves one into a skull! Once carved, they make for excellent appetizer decor dropped into the center of a bowl of delicious guac. Creepy and yummy – it's the best of both worlds.
